Packers, Politics, and PO-MO

My thoughts on life experiences, both the good and the bad.

Easy Listening

This has little to do with the precedence that I set for my blog but what I’ve learned is that precedence isn’t important. Amos Lee has a voice that will calm and ease the tense out of you.

Titles are arrogant and confining

So I haven’t written in a while due mainly to my battle with a build up of acid from stress. I’m not feeling that much better but I’ve gotten comfortable with the discomfort. I listened to the state of the union last night and was disappointed with the lack of proposed action to change/update our border policy and the lack of focus on education besides a few mention of the no child left behind program which does not work where it needs to work the most. Some may disagree but I’m one that was left behind and thankfully had family and friends to support and nudge me past my failures and the failures of the educational system. Anyways I was thinking of the act of being president in a more abstract way. America is in the political trenches until November. According to PO-MO, there is no one anything. Everything is an amalgamation/bits and pieces of things that have come before. The act of being president is an outdated act in which we select a person who will make choices, for four to eight years, in context of the concerns of society. The selection of choices will be based on the choices that the previous president made and on and on infinitely. There is no right choice, there are situationally advantageous choices that will be remembered later as mistakes. A human brain works that way. We remember bits and pieces of a situation and then make a judgement without seeing the landscape, a tree fully blooming in summer is beautiful but when the focus is zoomed out you can see the over-industrialization of a town where thousand of trees just like that one that is beautifully blooming once stood. I’m not trying to be negative, in fact I think it works both ways, we remember things as better than they were and worse than they actually were. It is not a judgement of character it just is what it is.

Just In

I just checked my email and saw this letter from John Kerry. It is in reference to the dirty campaigning against Barrack Obama but I think that it can be read in the larger context. Dirty politics should not win a politician the presidency. If it happens this time it will be because we as Americans let it happen. Fool me once it’s your fault fool me twice it’s mine. Please read the letter below whether you’re republican, democrat, or independent.

Dear Samantha,

I support Barack Obama because he doesn’t seek to perfect the politics of
Swiftboating — he seeks to end it.

This is personal for me, and for a whole lot of Americans who lived through the 2004
election.

As a veteran, it disgusts me that the Swift Boats we loved while we were in uniform
on the Mekong Delta have been rendered, in Karl Rove’s twisted politics, an ugly
verb meaning to lie about someone’s character just to win an election. But as
someone who cares about winning this election and changing the country I love, I
know it’s not enough to complain about a past we can’t change when our challenge is
to win the future — which is why we must stop the Swiftboating, stop the
push-polling, stop the front groups, and stop the email chain smears.

The truth matters, but how you fight the lies matters even more. We must be
determined never again to lose any election to a lie.

This year, the attacks are already starting. Some of you may have heard about the
disgusting lies about Barack Obama that are being circulated by email. These attacks
smear Barack’s Christian faith and deep patriotism, and they distort his record of
more than two decades of public service. They are nothing short of “Swiftboat” style
anonymous attacks.

These are the same tactics the right has used again and again, and as we’ve learned,
these attacks, no matter how bogus, can spread and take root if they go unchecked.

But not this time — we’re fighting back.

And when I say “we,” I mean that literally. I know Barack is committed to fighting
every smear every time. He’ll fight hard and stand up for the truth. But he can’t do
it alone.

We need you to email the truth to your address books. Print it out and post it at
work. Talk to your neighbors. Call your local radio station. Write a letter to the
editor. If lies can be spread virally, let’s prove to the cynics that the truth can
be every bit as persuasive as it is powerful.

The Obama campaign has created a place where you can find the truth you’ll need to
push back on these smears and a way to spread the truth to all of your address book.

Take action here:

So when your inbox fills up with trash and the emails of smear and fear, find the
facts, and help defeat the lies.

Barack Obama is committed to bringing our country together to meet the challenges we
face, but he knows that power gives up nothing without a struggle — and to win the
chance to change America, we must first defeat the hateful tactics that have been
used to tear us apart for too long.

With your help, we can turn the page on an era of small, divisive politics — but
only if next time you hear these attacks on Barack, you take action immediately:

The fight is just heating up — we won’t let them steal this election with lies and
distortions.

Thank you,

John Kerry

Tears Shed

I regret to inform all of my none existent travelers that the Packers did indeed lose in overtime. I shed a few tears as I watched the team walk mournfully off the field. However, the realization that the Packers had come so close this year after a streak of not so good years is what is carrying me. The Packers will be back next year and this time the team will start out with a comprehensive package. My only fear is that Brett Farve will not be back and will retire. This would be a shame after the way he has played this season. The young team needs a leader that can carry them when they get down, and that can push them to be better than they ever thought they could.

On to the elections, so Romney wins Nevada, big shock, but Hillary wins Nevada, shit. I am not a Hillary fan as your about to find out. She is just another establishment politician. The only two reason that she is getting the votes she’s getting is because most obviously she’s a she, and the other reason is that she has the most popular president in our recent history campaigning for her. If Bill was not out reminding people of how good it was when he was president and that Hillary could make it that good again she would not be getting as many votes. I realize that Americans at some points want to be lied to, “Honey does my but look big?” or “I thought you said mine was bigger!” anyways this is not the time to buy into the lies and propaganda. Really take the time and research the candidates even if there is no way that you would vote for them. Understand that the speeches and commercials are not a good way to get to know your candidate. You have to be actively involved in the political scene because the political scene is where your actions can count. It is the place where you get to say that you’re not going to allow choices to be made for you without your voice being heard. I will be forward and say that I really feel that Barrack Obama is someone I can trust in the White House, I have also been impressed by John Edwards. He would be the scrapper in the White House and I’m wondering if that might not be a bad idea. It doesn’t matter who I’m going to vote for, I’m not writing this so you’ll vote for someone I like, rather I want others to see that it is important to be involved. Learn what it is your passionate about and find the candidate that’s passionate about it to. Understand that what they say isn’t always the truth but how they have voted says a lot.

So I’ve been reading all these PO-MO books and have the metaphysical versus ontological debate with class mates and it seems that there is no answer. Since there is no “I” and there is no “new” I guess I am supposed to find some new conglomeration of many things to make something that is close to new, I think.  If none of this makes sense, don’t worry it’s not supposed to.

Boredom Rains Down on those who should be busy

I should probably give a little background here. I am a senior in my last quarter at Western Washington University and I am ready or past ready for it to be my last quarter. I have all the work load from my classes plus the bonus of trying to put together a graduate school application. I’m currently stressing over the fact that I have to write a grant that could potentially furnish the computer labs in the humanities building where I have spent the last two years of my life. I am a English Literature Major with a focus on Post-Modern Theory as you might have already guessed. We’ll see where it goes. I am standing at the marble counter of my house writing this little entry instead of reading articles or writing a strategic assessment plan. At times when I have the most work I find that I have the least motivation. One could assume from this that I would barely be getting by or have failing grades but alas that is not the case. I have a relatively high GPA and the respect of most of my professors. It is times like these that I watch CNN or the Sports channel that I have to pay an extra six bucks a month for.

So the Packers have kicked ass this season and being a long time fan, by this I mean more than a year like some of the fake Packer-Backers that only show up when the team is winning. On the west-coast they are playing at 3 pm against the visiting New York Giants who they have already beaten this season. I said some six months ago that it would be the Packers and the Patriots and no one believed me, well looky looky. The Packers and Patriots meeting will be one for the record books. Both Brett Farve and Tom Brady have been knocking out records like crazy this season( I think the records that Brett is setting are more impressive because he is 38, and he is working with a bunch of freshmen, but they have played their best as well) and they are both guaranteed a place in the NFL hall of fame. It would be awesome, and I mean that in the original sense of that word, to see a man like Farve beat a man like Brady. The character of the player off the field shouldn’t be an instrument by which you judge them but I’m breaking that and saying that Farve’s character as a man, father, husband, friend, community member, and finally as a football player outshines Brady on every step. Let the Green Bay Packer Pride be shone from coast to coast. I will be watching on Sunday and I hope you will as well.

Stay Tuned for further ramblings about politics, ’cause there is some stuff happening that is both positive and negative.

The First Blog of a First Time Blogger

So this is my first blog as the title might have eluded to.  I have many interests and opinions about most things and am curious to read yours.  Please feel free to add anything that you find of interest, it can be sports related, about the campaigns of both parties, or some philosophical debate.  I’m a newbie so give me any advice that might be relevant.
